Why your App Store keyword ranks fluctuate (and what's normal)
Ranks bouncing day to day is mostly normal, but some patterns do signal a real problem. Walk this checklist before assuming the algorithm is broken.
60-second triage
- 1Confirm the rank change is at least 7 days old, not a single-day blip.
- 2Look at the keyword's popularity score — low-popularity keywords swing more.
- 3Check whether you shipped a metadata change in the past 14 days.
- 4Look at the Top 10 — did a new app enter, or did the leader update?
- 5Check ratings cadence and recent reviews for a conversion shift.
The five causes
| # | Cause | Quickest check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Normal volatility | Has the change persisted >7 days? |
| 2 | Sample-size noise | Is the keyword low-popularity? |
| 3 | Your own metadata change | Did you ship a release recently? |
| 4 | Competitor moves | Did a new app enter the Top 10? |
| 5 | Conversion / ratings shift | Did your ratings cadence drop? |
Cause 1: Normal volatility
App Store ranks move daily. A few positions of movement on a competitive keyword over a 24-hour window is mostly noise. The signal lives in the 7- and 14-day trend, not in any single day. Wait before acting.
Action: only treat a rank change as a signal if it persists for at least 7 days, ideally 14.
Cause 2: Sample-size noise on low-popularity keywords
Low-popularity keywords have very few apps actively competing for them. Small absolute changes look like big rank swings when only 5–10 apps are in contention. A keyword with popularity in the bottom band can swing ±10 positions for almost no reason.
Action: use the keyword's popularity score as context. For low-popularity keywords, accept higher noise. Focus reactive work on keywords that actually drive traffic.
Cause 3: You shipped a metadata change recently
Metadata changes that go out with a new version cause rank reshuffling as Apple re-indexes. The first 7–14 days after a metadata-changing release are particularly noisy.
Action: if you shipped within the last 14 days, wait the full window before drawing conclusions about the new metadata's effect.
Cause 4: A competitor moved
You can move down without doing anything wrong — if a strong app enters the keyword, ships better metadata, or runs a successful campaign, your relative rank drops even if your absolute ranking inputs are unchanged.
Action: open the Top 10 for the keyword in RespectASO and look for new entrants or recently-updated competitors. With Pro, the AI Competitor Analyzer breaks down what the new leader changed.
Cause 5: Conversion or ratings shift
Apple weights apps that convert. A drop in tap-through or a slowdown in fresh ratings can pull rank down even with no metadata change. Check for review-bombs, broken in-app prompts, or a new screenshot order that's hurting conversion.
Action: audit your icon, first two screenshots, and ratings cadence. Re-establish a ratings prompt at a high-success moment if reviews have slowed.
