ASO Diagnostic
A competitor is outranking my app: a focused diagnostic
If a competitor pulled ahead on a keyword you used to win, the cause is almost always one of five things. Run this checklist before reacting.
60-second triage
- 1Confirm the competitor's lead is real (≥7 days), not single-day noise.
- 2Check whether the competitor shipped a recent app version with new metadata.
- 3Compare your ratings velocity to the competitor's recent reviews.
- 4Audit your own conversion: icon, first 2 screenshots, subtitle clarity.
- 5Check whether they're stronger in this storefront specifically (per-storefront rank).
The five causes
| # | Cause | Quickest check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Competitor shipped a metadata change | Did they release recently? |
| 2 | Conversion drift on your side | Has your TTR or ratings cadence dropped? |
| 3 | Ratings velocity gap | Have they accumulated reviews much faster recently? |
| 4 | App authority shift | Did they grow downloads or charts position? |
| 5 | Storefront-specific advantage | Are they ahead only in certain countries? |
Cause 1: They shipped a metadata change
The most common cause. A competitor updated their title, subtitle, or keyword field with terms more aligned to the keyword in question, and now they're indexing better for it.
Action: open the competitor's listing in RespectASO's Top 10 view. Note their exact title, subtitle, and the apparent keyword strategy. With Pro, run the AI Competitor Analyzer for a guided breakdown.
Cause 2: Your conversion has drifted
Apple weights apps that convert. If your icon, first two screenshots, or subtitle stopped converting as well as they used to, your rank decays even with stable metadata.
Action: audit conversion levers. Refresh the icon if it's looked tired for a year. Reorder screenshots to lead with your strongest differentiator.
Cause 3: Ratings velocity gap
Recent ratings count more than old ones. If a competitor accumulates fresh ratings faster than you do (because they prompt at the right moment, run a campaign, or just have more daily users), their authority signal grows.
Action: set up an in-app ratings prompt at a high-success moment if you don't have one. Don't prompt on launch; prompt on completion of a meaningful action.
Cause 4: App authority shift
If the competitor's overall download velocity or charts position improved, they have more authority across the board, not just on this keyword. Authority gains usually compound: more downloads → more ratings → better rank → more downloads.
Action: don't try to win the same keyword head-on. Use multi-keyword search to find adjacent sweet-spot keywords where your authority is competitive.
Cause 5: Storefront-specific advantage
The competitor may be much stronger in certain storefronts than yours and weaker in others. App Store rank is per-storefront, so the global picture can hide where you're actually winning or losing.
Action: use Country Opportunity Finder to see where the same keyword has tractable competition, and consider localizing for a storefront the competitor hasn't invested in.
